على أساس هذه الإختلافات بين X and Y + دور إفرازات المرأة الحمضية المعطي للأسبقية لجنس حسب آخر في مواجهة مع قاعدية إفراز الرجل أقام العالم البيولوجي Landrum Brewer Shettles نظريته الشهيرة ثم حدد تقنيات و توجيهات Shettles Method للأزواج الراغبين في تحديد جنس مولودهم و ذلك لرفع إحتمال إخصاب النطاف ذات الجنس الرغوب و هي تقنية معمول بها عالميا منذ ظهرت هذه النظرية في المؤسسات الخاصة commercial clinics نظرا لإعطائها بعض النتائج المثمرة خصوصا للأزواج الذين لا يرغبون بحمل صناعي و أي تدخل إصطناعي في هذه العملية كما تسمى " IVF" الإخصاب الصناعي " in "vitro fertilization و التي طُورت أيضا على يد Landrum Brewer Shettles و يُعد رائدا و ذا فضل كبير في هذا التخصص المعمول به حاليا بكثرة بأمريكا و أستراليا والعديد من الدول في العالم

but experts do not agree that the method works; for example, the 1995 article 'Timing of Sexual Intercourse in Relation to Ovulation—Effects on the Probability of Conception, Survival of the Pregnancy, and Sex of the Baby', in the New England Journal of Medicine concludes that "for practical purposes, the timing of sexual intercourse in relation to ovulation has [sic] no influence on the sex of the baby."[1] However, this stands in stark contrast to an earlier, much larger study from the New England Journal of Medicine (1979) that concluded that "[our] results ... demonstrate that insemination on different days of the menstrual cycle does lead to variations in sex ratio."[2] With such conflicting results, it appears that more studies are needed to determine if the timing of insemination has any impact on the sex of a baby. A recent letter [3] published by BMJ, reviewing some recent research, tries to clarify this issue. It refers that “So far, researchers have found no morphological differences between human X sperm and Y sperm",[4] which seems to dismiss the original claim of Shettles Method
